Last night’s premiere of Daren Bartlett’s stunningly beautiful documentary feature Cadência drew the audience into a strange symbiotic contrast of colour, sound, ecstatic happiness and admiration. The one-line brief that Nike had given the director was to “articulate the ambiguous essence of symbolic identity”, so Bartlett, himself a traveling resident of Rio De Janairo, set out to create an up-close portrait of Brazilian culture unified by one love: football.
Despite the obvious presence of poverty, the feeling of misery seemed notably absent from the movie. “To be miserable you have to have money,” explained Bartlett in the post-screening Q&A. True desolation only really seemed to set in when World Cup matches were lost.
1948 AKA London’s Nike Stadium hosted the after-party and private viewing of the film’s interactive exhibit prior to its public opening on March 24. Stills from the documentary are showcased alongside an epic, large scale video installation and a presentation of Jiwon Park’s original art stills.
