As one of the last Werner Herzog films being shown in V22’s unofficial homage to the German filmmaker, the arts organization is obviously saving the best until last. The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner (1974) has been described as one of Herzog’s best works and the director himself calls it “one of my most important films.”

The documentary follows the extraordinary story of German carpenter and former world champion ski-jumper Walter Steiner. Told in Herzog’s inimitable narrative style, this short film juxtaposes Steiner’s fearlessness on the slopes against the mundane aspects of his day job, while also highlighting the poetry and pitfalls of such a challenging sport.
