Lawrence Watson had barely finished high school when he started as a junior photographer at NME. Freelance gigs with London Weekly Television shooting The Style Council triggered an ongoing collaboration with Paul Weller while he steadily built his portfolio in the late ‘70s while his work was propelled into the spotlight when an unrelated stint in the US meant he was on-hand to record the explosion of hip hop in the early ‘80s, photographing the likes of Run DMC and Public Enemy as they sat on the cusp of international mega-stardom

This exhibition and accompanying book present portraits and stills from the last 25 years featuring the likes of David Bowie, Noel Gallagher, Blur, Orbital and Run DMC. Noted for his fly-on-the-wall ability to capture musicians during some of their quieter, more ponderous moments, Watson’s images deliver fleeting glimpses of the artist behind the celebrity.Quote_transparent
