After listening to our first Lightning Bolt CD a while back, it ended up sliding down to the “less-played” section of the rack. We wondered, frankly, why the epileptic jumble of noise had critics so enamored. Seeing the band had set a date for London, we decided to give the Rhode Island duo another try.
If you don’t know what we mean, watch the short blasts of their live performances to see how the penny drops. You’ve gotta see Brian Chippendales’ percussive magic in motion before you realize what this Lightning Bolt beast is about: accompanied only by Brian Gibson on bass guitar, it’s incredible how the band achieves its cacophonous wall of sound. Lightning Bolt prefers to play on the ground instead of the stage with the audience crowded; all the better to unleash their frenetic energy that strikes like a flash of white hot noise.
