If a ‘Hounds of Love’-era Kate Bush were to open a shop, this is probably what it would look like. The brainchild of garish Comme Des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo, this Mayfair-based avant-garde concept fashion store is a must-see epicentre of eccentric chic and offbeat style that stocks a mix of big-ticket labels—Lanvin, Chanel, Dior, Nina Ricci—alongside more rarefied concerns: Azzedine Alaia and Veronique Branquinho sit alongside exclusive pieces by Christopher Kane and outlandish fashion tyro Gareth Pugh.
Occupying six storeys of a building just off Piccadilly, Dover Street Market demands a visit even if you’re not into dropping top dollar on haute couture, as the designer concessions here often feel more like contemporary art installations. As such, the emporium has a strange museum-like quality that’s entertaining enough simply to browse through. And as payoff, you can treat yourself to something sweet from the Rose Bakery on the top floor—a lesser-known eatery with an alfresco balcony option. New editions and spaces are added regularly, with this years latest addition being the new Bathing Ape retail experience, Nowhere. There’s even a biannual ‘Tachiagari’ in which the store completely shuts down while all six levels are given a complete overhaul. So make sure to plan your visit accordingly.
