Woodhouse founder Philip Start and his wife (former Fall guitarist Brix Smith-Start) own all three of these Rivington Street flagships, two of which are men’s specialists. With a garish-eccentric interior—think classic British design cut with circus-style lighting, exposed warehouse-type brickwork and floor-to-ceiling mirrors—no.59 is the older outpost and offers a refined mix of off-centre labels that hints at the Shoreditch stalwart’s split clientele.

Quilted Ralph Lauren hunting jackets hang neatly next to low-neck Acne tees, Raf Simons sweaters and striped Sonia Rykiel knits. Commes Des Garcons has long been stocked here—check for the neon leather wallets and other near bonkers-designed accessories. Jill Sander is the latest—and very welcome—addition to the line-up with custom-fit cotton shirts and fantastic round-toe leather lace-ups. Curiously, it’s the choice of denim, almost exclusively Nudie Jeans, that leaves one wanting.

Meanwhile, a walk down the road to no. 40 finds the younger sibling of the trio, Mr. Start, a split-level atelier that specialises in made-to-measure shirts and suits. You try handling their mod Italian three-piece or signature Parisian-cut soft-cotton shirts and not reaching for your wallet.Quote_transparent

A Gentlemen's Guide Men-only shopping

A trio of artful boutiques on one street. Hugely popular with both suit-clad city boys and cooler-than-thou Hoxton hipsters.
