From ladies who lunch, to gentlemen who amuse themselves with worldly curiosities, the V&A is eight acres of our favourite things. Within the hallowed walls of what bills itself as ‘the world’s greatest museum of art and design’ can be found an encyclopaedia of designed objects, from diamond rings and monumental sculpture, to exquisite couture fashion and the most sublime glassware. The V&A has a massive permanent collection spanning all arenas of the creative and decorative arts; photography, furniture, textiles, painting, metalwork, ceramics….the list is endless. Curated in part by the origins of objects (the Jameel Gallery of the Islamic Middle East is a recently redesigned must-see gallery), in part by the materials and techniques of production (where else could you find a whole gallery dedicated to wrought iron railings?) and in part chronologically (the British Galleries are an intense and beguiling experience). We defy you to not be enthralled, amused or fascinated by something during your visit.

In addition to the permanent collections, the V&A hosts a changing programme of blockbuster temporary exhibitions, a range of thoughtful events and practical workshops, and has a great cafe set in characteristically impressive surroundings. It is also making a name for itself developing well-considered programmes to celebrate Black Heritage Season and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History month. A day just isn’t long enough to see it all.Quote_transparent

Cedar Lewisohn - London

Cedar Lewisohn Curator/Writer/Artist

If I can't get to Glasgow to wander round the Burrul Collection and look at the tapestries (and their Manet), I go to the V+A to try and get a bit of culture.
