It’s back. After three years in the cultural wilderness, the Saatchi Gallery reopened in October 2008, aiming to reclaim its crown as the king of rebellious, provocative contemporary art galleries in London (if not the universe). And this time it’s a monster. 70,000 square feet of Chelsea art space in the Duke of York’s HQ building is now dedicated to Charles Saatchi’s distinctive taste in art. Entry is free of charge, so we can all now bear witness to the development of the Saatchi canon that previously made public an entire new generation of British artists, and that continues to be associated with the most talked-about works made this century.

During its absence we longed for Saatchi’s wicked sense of humour and insubordinate sense of artistic convention. Not necessarily reflecting the voice of the academy, we love Saatchi for giving us all something to talk about, to get upset about, to be challenged by, or just to piss off boring old art farts. The new Saatchi Gallery has numerous large gallery spaces showcasing temporary and influential exhibitions, a smaller Project Room which features an artist from Saatchi’s collection outside its standard exhibition programme, a space dedicated to Saatchi Online artists and what every discerning gallery needs: a grand new cafe. Enjoy the spectacle.Quote_transparent
