London is bursting with high-end delis, but there a few to match Ottolenghi. Four branches of this cafe-cum-gastronomic emporium now exist, and each is exquisitely tailored to suit its local surroundings. Their Islington outpost is the most restaurant-like of the four, with seating for up to 50 diners and extended opening hours.
The cool, minimalist interior provides the perfect backdrop for the sumptuous works of artistically prepared food that decorate the tables and window displays. Drool-inducing potential purchases adorn the storefront, whilst in the back, local organic proponents swap stories and share delicacies such as roasted, feta and ricotta-stuffed courgettes with pine nuts and sun-dried tomatoes and and char-grilled salmon with papaya, avocado, coriander and chilli salsa at long, wooden communal tables. Breakfast is, predictably, frenetic on the weekends, but it’s worth setting the alarm clock just a few ticks earlier in order to get there before all the fabulous homemade fare disappears and the tables become jammed with yummy taste seeking mummies and their designer-wear decked out babies.
