Set in a suitably Modernist, white-washed building near fashionable Butler’s Wharf, this museum is a must for all design buffs and fans of stylized everyday objects. Founded in 1989, it claims to be the first venue to recognise design as a museum-worthy artform. Unlike most of the capital’s major museums, entrance is not free because it doesn’t qualify for government subsidies. You can feel good offering the entrance fee, however, as the museum’s run as a charity, with all ticket proceeds going back into the museum.
Perfectly-sized with two floors plus a “Tank” space out on riverside, the Design Museum houses a frequently changing programme of exhibitions. After satisfying your cultural appetites, retire to famed Conran eatery, the Blue Print CafĂ©, on the first floor and reward yourself with a slap-up meal.
