British artist Roger Hiorns employs unlikely materials such as detergent, perfume and fire to transform everyday objects like steel poles and car engines into artistic anomalies. In the latest Artangel commission, “Seizure”, Hiorns makes exceptional use of some copper sulphate crystals and a condemned council flat near London Bridge to create an otherworldly odyssey suspended in the heart of the city.
Hiorns reanimates the physical aesthetic of the derelict housing estate by converting this crib in the hood into a mystical, crystalline cave. The internal concrete structure of the apartment, which will be demolished after the closure of “Seizure”, has been remodelled through a cystallisation process that leaves behind glittering, organic forms in electrifying colours. Artangel provides wellies and gloves to all who queue up to enter Hiorn’s stunning urban intervention. All you have to do is turn up, venture inside 157 Harper Road, and be amazed.
